Never mind the Oscars…Here’s the Supplier Awards!
A quick-fire interview with Julie Welsh on the eve of the biggest event in our calendar.
It’s awards season and, with a week to go until we roll out our very own red carpet for the Supplier Excellence Awards on Thursday 20 February, we thought we would ask our Director, Julie Welsh a few quick-fire questions to see what she’s looking forward to and what she thinks the awards mean to our suppliers and the wider procurement industry.
Q. Why do you think the awards are such an important date in the procurement diary?
Julie: The awards are an important recognition of the good practice, innovation and excellence that our suppliers of all sizes demonstrate. The awards give them an opportunity to showcase their achievements among colleagues, customers and peers.
Q. What do you think it means to a supplier to win an award?
Julie: I know that it means so much to our suppliers to win an award… you can see for yourself on our video from last time. I’ve spoken with many of them over the years and several have told me that it’s not only boosted morale throughout their business, it’s also provided them with a talking point, a badge of honour to wear when they’re communicating with customers.
Q. Diversity is a big theme at award ceremonies this year, so how do you think ours hold up?
Julie: This year’s finalists are a very diverse bunch from a wide range of industries. I’m delighted that almost half of them are SMEs or third sector enterprises. Our supplier base is more than 70% SME and that’s strongly reflected in our awards.
Q. What are you most looking forward to at the awards?
Julie: As a bit of Deacon Blue fan you might think I’ll say meeting Dougie Vipond again, but I can honestly say that it’s seeing the winners excitement when their name gets read out! It’s like all that hard work has built to this moment and it’s a sheer joy to be there to share their big moment with them.
Q. Do you have a final message for everyone attending the awards on Thursday?
Julie: Yes, enjoy…well maybe not too much if you are working the next day, and celebrate the fact that your hard work and achievements are being recognised. I’m looking forward to it and I hope I get the chance to speak with as many of you as possible!
The Scotland Excel Supplier Excellence Awards are on Thursday 20 February at the Radisson Blu in Glasgow.
